Since the advent of cemented carbide as an important tool material and structural material in 1923, it has a history of more than 90 years. In order to find new materials to replace high-speed steel, the research on cemented carbide began. Early work focused on various poorly soluble compounds, especially tungsten carbide. At first, tungsten carbide was not used in industry due to its high brittleness, easy cracking and toughness.
In 1923, Schroter first proposed the method of powder metallurgy, which is essentially the WC-Co cemented carbide production process that is still used today. As a result, cemented carbide production technology began to develop rapidly.
At first, people thought that WC-Co cemented carbide could process various materials, but it was soon discovered that this alloy is easy to wear when machining steel, and then the WC-TiC-Co alloy was developed. -TiC-TaC-Co alloy, so that the problem of steel processing can be properly solved.
The emergence of indexable cemented carbide tools has significantly improved the processing effect compared with welding tools. Coated cemented carbide is another major progress in cemented carbide production technology. Not only the life of uncoated carbide inserts is increased several times, but the cutting speed can be increased by about 30%.
In the 1960s and 1970s, with the development of science and technology, the use of carbide heads became more and more extensive. In order to obtain products with better performance, the production technology and process equipment of cemented carbide are constantly being improved and innovated. The application of spray drying technology can obtain powder granules with stable quality, good fluidity and excellent compression performance. Hot isostatic pressing technology has also been introduced into the field of cemented carbide production in this matter. The alloys produced by this method have extremely low porosity, toughness, fracture stress and impact resistance.
In the 1980s, the outstanding features of the development of cemented carbide are: on the one hand, the coated cemented carbide has developed rapidly, the products have increased significantly, and the application field has been continuously expanded. At the same time, great progress has been made in coating technology, and the application of chemical deposition methods and physical vapor deposition methods in cemented carbide coatings has been further improved. On the other hand, in the early 1970s, ultrafine alloys appeared, which enabled better performance of cemented carbide products. For many well-known cemented carbide manufacturers, ultra-fine cemented carbide is a class of cemented carbide products they are proud of, as well as high-precision, high-performance coated cemented carbide. The rapidly popular low-pressure hot isostatic pressing technology is a breakthrough progress in the field of cemented carbide production technology, which plays an important role in improving the quality of the entire cemented carbide.

Cemented carbide has high hardness, strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, known as "industrial teeth", used to manufacture cutting tools, cutting tools, cobalt tools and wear-resistant parts, widely used in military, aerospace , machining, metallurgy, oil drilling, mining tools, electronic communications, construction and other fields, with the development of downstream industries, the market demand for cemented carbide continues to increase. Carbide products are developing in the direction of precision and miniaturization, and the requirements for dimensional accuracy of cutting tools are getting higher and higher. Intelligence promotes the continuous development of the cemented carbide industry towards newer and higher fields.
