Cemented Carbide Dies

Cemented Carbide Dies

Cemented carbide is a tool and structural material with properties between ceramics and high-speed steel. It has comprehensive properties such as high hardness, high strength, high density, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance and small expansion coefficient. Its life is ten times or even dozens of times that of steel molds. Commonly used cemented carbide dies include cold heading dies, cold punching dies, wire drawing dies, hexagonal dies, spiral dies, etc., which are widely used in the die industry. In industry, tungsten-cobalt cemented carbide is generally used.

WC-Co cemented carbide is a new high-performance engineering material. The alloy is used directly after sintering the finished product, and is widely used in molds, tools, measuring tools and wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant parts and other fields. The study found that the WC-Co cemented carbide can be strengthened by heat treatment. The service life of the hot-cutting die with composite strengthening treatment is 4 times that of the one without heat treatment, and 50 times that of the original smelting steel die, and the technical and economic benefits are remarkable.

Advantages and characteristics of cemented carbide dies

1. Cemented carbide has high hardness, high wear resistance and high red hardness, and can maintain ≥56HRC hardness at high temperature of 550℃;
2. Has a high elastic modulus, generally (4~7)×104kg/mm2, and has good rigidity at room temperature;
3. Has high compressive strength greater than 6000MPa;
4. It has good oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance, and is not easy to be oxidized under acid and alkali resistance and high temperature;
5. It has a low thermal expansion coefficient and is suitable for manufacturing high, precise and sharp precision dies.

Cemented carbide dies classification

一、 cemented carbide wire drawing dies, which account for the vast majority of cemented carbide dies. The main grades of common drawing dies are YG8, YG6, YG3, followed by YG15, YG6X, YG3X

二、cold punching die, shaping die, the main brands are YC20C, YG20, YG15

三、non-magnetic alloy mold for the production of magnetic materials, such as YN series of YN (including 20, 25, 30, 35, 40)

四、Hot tungsten carbide die

Several issues to be considered in the design of cemented carbide die

1. Select the object of the part. It must have the characteristics of large output, good structural shape, quality and dimensional accuracy, and the thickness of blanking parts should not be too thick.
2. Reasonable use of cemented carbide. For the analysis of the most easily worn parts, if necessary, the edges of the upper and lower die are all made of cemented carbide. In some cases, such as the punch structure is weak or difficult to fix, reasonable tool steel and cemented carbide can be used in combination to make the mold manufacturing and use the most reasonable and economical.
3. Convex and concave die structure. Under the conditions allowed by mold processing, the cemented carbide inlaid structure is more economical in material use and processing than the overall structure, easy to process and easy to repair.
